I think the most important part of non-verbal communication is understanding the situation in which you are in. Many non-verbal communications can be interpreted differently pending on the setting you may find yourself in. For example, understanding how to interpret people's actions based upon a public or private setting.
Other important aspects of non-verbal communication are the different distances (intimate, personal, social, and public) that can be interpreted to mean certain things. Understanding these signs can help in both an office or social setting. In an interactive job in which you are asked to be involved socially in the company, these distances(as well as non-verbal skills) can benefit you while socially conversing with business partners.
